This tool uses RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), the structured, HTTPS-based successor to the classic Whois protocol that ICANN has been rolling out across registries since 2019.

🌍 Coverage

Excellent for .com, .net, .org, .info and virtually all newer gTLDs, plus a growing list of country-code domains including .uk. A handful of legacy ccTLDs (like .io and .co) haven't adopted RDAP yet.

🔒 Registrant privacy

Since GDPR, most registrars redact personal registrant contact details from public Whois/RDAP records — you'll typically see the registrar, dates, name servers and status, not a person's name or address.

🚦 What status codes mean

Codes like "client transfer prohibited" are EPP status codes set by the registrar or registry to lock a domain against unauthorized changes or transfers — they're normal and don't indicate a problem.

📅 Why expiration dates matter

Domains that aren't renewed can lapse and become available for anyone to register — keep an eye on the expiration date if the domain matters to you.

Where to look next

Whois and RDAP describe the domain name — who registered it, with which registrar, and when it expires. They say nothing about the servers it currently points at, which are tracked in an entirely separate system. To close that gap, resolve the domain with the DNS record lookup to see its A, MX and TXT records, then run the resulting address through the IP address lookup to find the network operator and hosting location behind it.

This matters more than it first appears. Registration data is often redacted under GDPR, so for many domains the registrar and the hosting network are the only identifying details you can actually obtain — and the two are frequently different companies. If you are assessing whether a site is trustworthy, pairing the registration date here with the hosting network from an IP lookup, and the certificate details from the SSL certificate checker, gives a far more complete picture than any one of them alone.
